Chairdozer speechless!?! A random act of kindness

Last Saturday My wife and I had agreed to keep our niece for a while, along with 2 of our Grandkids. At the appointed time we loaded up the grandkids and went out to pick up our niece. Being hot out, on the way home we decided to stop at a local ice cream shop/restaurant for lunch. After lunch when we were ready to leave my 3 year old granddaughter and I went out to open up the van, while my wife and the others waited in where it was cool. I was going across the parking lot, holding my granddaughters hand, focusing on keeping her out of trouble and getting my van open, when I hear a woman’s voice say “Stop!”

I look over and see a woman come over and tell me that I had run over a piece of gum on the sidewalk. What she did next floored me. She said “If you’ll roll forward slightly I’ll try to clean it off there for you.” I did as requested and she reached into her carry out bag, got some napkins, and got down right there on the hot pavement and cleaned it off my tire!! Saying “I’d hate to see you track that in and ruin the carpet in your van.” I was in shock as I thanked her profusely! I didn’t know what else to say! My wife and the kids had came out by then, possibly to see the show if some stranger had said something inappropriate or crude. Instead they saw a different show. Somebody doing something kind and thoughtful, and me…Speechless!

Common sense apparently isn’t? Or One of the many costs of being in a wheelchair?

Why is it that when someone in a wheelchair wants to see something out in public, like a parade for instance, no matter how close you get the instant it starts you’ll immediately get someone’s butt in front of you? And if you have a camera or camcorder in your hand, it’s even worse! It’s like they want you to take pictures of their a$$es! ..... Continue

Crusin’ through life (or at least Iowa) in low gear! Or Growing up broke has it’s advantages?

My wife and I went to the city the other day, for some appointments. It’s a little over an hours drive for us (that speed limit is merely a suggestion… Right?!?) As those of you have followed along know, my wife doesn’t drive, because she’s legally blind, and not even Iowa will issue licenses to the blind. (although you’d never know it by the way some people park!) ......  Continue

An old friend, and a new friend

A friend of mine called recently and invited me to join him and an acquaintance of his for refreshments. We met in a local establishment. We sat around sipping on cool refreshments and visiting pleasantly. But I noticed one thing, the newcomer would always speak just a bit slower and louder when speaking to me...... Continue

Do you suffer from insanity?

We don’t! We enjoy it around here! We consider it cheap entertainment. It’s truly a big part of what helps me survive the bad days. I was fortunate to have grown up with it. You see, I grew up in rural Iowa in the days before cell phones, text messaging, internet, video games, computers, or even cable TV. What did we do for entertainment? We had imaginations! We would almost fight when a door to door salesman came around, to see who got to jerk his chain. And phone solicitors? We made a game out of those guys! Seriously! The rules were simple. Keep them on the phone as long as possible, but don’t buy anything!!! We even kept score! No kidding! The scoring went like this; 1 point for every minute that you could keep them on the phone, 5 points every time you could get them so frustrated that they stuttered, 2 points for every new twist you could throw in, and up to 5 bonus points for originality. You lost all points if they asked if you were kidding. My best score was 32.

My crazy life (Murphy was an optimist!)

A week ago Friday, after having a “Murphy’s Law” kind of day, (the kind of day that makes you think Murphy was an optimist!), we were trying to decide what to have for supper when we decided to go out to eat, to a little local ice cream shop that is a favorite of ours. So we all piled into my van and cruised out there, without a problem in the world right? I wish!.... Continue

A Government Of the people, By the people, & For the people” but what people?

My ancestors have paid into Social Security and Medicare since it‘s inception. It’s not right when someone can come into the country illegally, pay no taxes, and yet go into any hospital and get the same care as you or I, and not have to pay one red cent, not even a co-pay. How is this fair? I’m not saying shut them out in the cold, I’m just saying let’s take care of our own first ...... Continue

Really?!?

Even when I go somewhere by myself many times I have pulled up in my van. parked, let the ramp down, got out, and had someone actually come over to me and say “So you drive?” Now you seen me drive up, didn’t you? I try not to give in to my smart a$$ed side and say something like “No, my van has auto pilot!“ or “No, the Keebler elves brought me here!” I try to educate instead. I have even let people step into my van and see the hand controls and the ez lock bracket in the floor and patiently explained to them how it all works. Even some of the Doctors we go to have asked “When you drive, do you use hand controls?” My smart a$$ed side is always tempted to say something like “no, ear controls!” or “No, voice command. I sneezed on the way here and passed 3 cars!”

Telestik

I ordered this online recently through an introductory offer, buy one get one free. I had been looking at it for a while now, but thought the price was a little steep for something I‘d never even seen except in photos before. It looked really handy but then again most of the pics were on ads to sell this thing so of course it looked good. But when they offered it 2 for 1 I ordered it. I also ordered a strap for it. The next day while I was out I get a call on my cell phone ...... Continue

The fax is in, we just don't get it!

I have a wound (technically a decubitus ulcer or pressure sore) on my backside. I get wound care supplies each month from 2 different medical supply places. 1 is in the same town as my Doctor, about 25 miles from here. I’ll refer to it as H medical supply, the other is mail-order. It works like this. On the first of the month my nurse calls in the wound measurements to my Doctor ....... Continue

The “r” word (What’s in a name?)

Why is it that people get so worked up about being “Politically Correct” when it comes to what to call certain groups of people? And why do some people take offense at some of these terms but not others? Take “the r word” for instance. Weather you say slow, retarded, mentally handicapped, challenged or any other term. And it’s no different for us ...... Continue

Wheelchair Discrimination

Are we as wheelchair users being discriminated against by our own government via the “in the home” clause? I believe so! Isn’t a artificial leg a mobility device of a sort? Or a walker? Why are they not for use “in the home” only? Why single out the wheelchair users? ..... Continue

Wheelchair = Idiot Magnet?

Is it just me, or are wheelchairs idiot magnets? Or maybe I have a sign around my neck that is invisible to me that says “Tell me your story”. Now I am a friendly, polite, outgoing person with a good sense of humor. I have one character flaw. I’m a bit of a smart a$$. You know the type, not hurtful, just the class clown. Case in point ...... Continue

MY LIFT IS FINALLY IN!!!

After just over 2 years worth of planning, struggling, sweating, crying, heartbreak, ect, and overcoming unforeseen obstacles at literally every turn, taking showers in a garage heated only with a small propane heater with the overhead door cracked to let the water out, because I didn’t have a shower or tub in the house that was useable for me. My lift is finally in and working!!! I got access to another whole floor of my house for the very first time Monday! With a heated, roll in shower to be finished up tomorrow! Getting my lift was thanks to a few very smart people and installing it and building my roll in shower I have some very kind, caring and at points quite ingenious family members to thank. All I can say is THANK YOU! And GOD BLESS one and all!

Why do they hire able bodied people for desk jobs

Why do they hire able bodied people, who could do any job, for desk jobs, like at social security, and pay them exorbitant wages, but yet pay the handicapped to stay home? Why not, in cases where they could, hire the handicapped? Where are all the disabled counselors, case workers and such? ..... Continue
